The weather throughout the United States is ever-changing and unpredictable, making it hard for residents to control the temperature inside their homes. While HVAC systems and thermostats can help regulate the temperature, it can be difficult to know the ideal setting. The outdoor climate, humidity, time of year, and time of day can affect your thermostat setting, and knowing the best settings depending on the weather can help you be more comfortable and save you some money, too!
Look at some of our best tips on the ideal temperature settings for your home, no matter the season:
- Stay Consistent. When the weather gets hot during the summer, you may be tempted to crank your air on for more cool air. However, this will decrease your home’s energy efficiency and make your cooling costs skyrocket; because of this, it’s essential to keep your thermostat temperatures as consistent as possible. Though you can adjust it based on your personal preferences, the ideal temperature for comfort and energy efficiency during the summer is between 78-80 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Change Settings Before You Leave. If you’re leaving your home during the summer, you’ll likely want to adjust your settings to save money but still return to a comfortable home. Consider how long you’ll be away, the costs of heating and cooling, and the temperature you want your home to be when you arrive back. If you’re back in the winter or fall, set the temperature a little higher; if you’re returning during the summer, set the temperature a little lower.
- Go Lower in the Winter. Speaking of the winter, you’ll want to have a different setting for your thermostat during the cooler months. However, as we’ve said before, you’ll want to stay consistent to optimize energy efficiency and save on costs. Set your thermostat to about 68 degrees Fahrenheit, and if you’re a little uncomfortable, adjust the temperature by 1 or 2 degrees.
- Get a Smart Thermostat. Invest in a smart or programmable thermostat in your home so you don’t need to adjust the settings every day, as it will be able to recognize and adapt to the weather and create an ideal thermostat setting based on that. In the long term, a smart thermostat will help you save money while still staying comfortable.
